THESE 3 THINGS 327

These 3 Things

327

1. Everyone is a critic. And everyone is a human being. I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Mostly provoked by reading a few articles criticizing celebrities who have donated to international causes. The articles question whether it is ethnocentric of the celebs to assume that other places are in need of outside help. I get that, I really do and I even partially agree. But in a micro sense it all made me keenly aware that there will always be critics, even when you are trying with all your heart to do something good. This is important to remember in business. We want to listen to our critics, and engage in the act of feedback. Not doing so is dangerous. But on the days that we feel attacked and feel it deeply, I will remember that somewhere, someone is hating on Bono and George Clooney for not doing charity right.

2. The idea of summer is way better than summer actually.

3. You never know what's coming. And isn't that great. I caught an old episode of Oprah on YouTube the other day. It was 2002 and she was interviewing Chris Tucker about an upcoming role where he was playing the first black president. When he told Oprah about the role she laughed and laughed and laughed and said, "Wouldn't that be something." And you know what? It was. It was something, and wonderful, and life changing, and pretty much one of the best things ever. And no one saw it coming in 2002. Just 6 years before it actually happened. So here's to big surprises, shifts in the stratosphere, forks in the road, and leaping before you look. You never know what's around the bend.
