THESE 3 THINGS 204

These 3 Things

204

1. The 60's satirical television comedy hit The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour originally premiered 50 years ago this week on CBS. What started out as a fun and lighthearted break from the stark reality of 1967 ended up being a deeply political and historically significant part of the movement that was the late 60's. Censored like crazy for their segments responding to the war in Vietnam, President Lyndon B Johnson, and discussion of religion on prime time television Tom and Dick Smothers found themselves in the middle of a revolution with a very public platform.

I remember seeing reruns of the show as a kid, never knowing the depth of which the show went to give voice to the movement of the late 60's.

2. One skit in particular that poked fun of President Lyndon B Johnson caused him to call CBS in the middle of the night and ask that the show back down a bit from giving him such a hard time. This part sounds eerily familiar today. What separates LBJ from 45 is this...

3. The final episode of the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Dick Smothers read a letter from then former President Lyndon B Johnson. It read,

"It is part of the price of leadership of this great and free nation to be the target of clever satirists. You have given the gift of laughter to our people. May we never grow so somber or self-important that we fail to appreciate the humor in our lives."

Wow. What a difference a brain makes.
