1. Again, I said this about a million times today. I can tell it is going to take a while before I feel it deep within my bones. So, here we go again:
Today I promise to be my best self. To be an outstanding mother, a passionate artist, a good friend, and an open hearted woman. I will get on the mat, create with great abandon in the studio, and remember wherever there is a lock, there is always a key. I am sending love to those who need it, and those who don't think they do. I'm going to start here. Small but mighty.
2. Don't convince yourself that an act is too small to make a difference. I was thinking about a childhood friend's mom today. Back in the early 90's she would take those 2 inch size letter stickers from the office supply store and write manifestos on the rear window of her red Volvo station wagon . Some were just a few words, others were long paragraphs. While I couldn't remember specifically what they said, at the time it always reminded me that there was a strong woman living down the street who stood for something. When talking with my mom about it this morning, she recalled what a big difference it made to her, often feeling isolated as a mom and an artist living in suburbia. Just knowing there was a woman down the street who spoke her mind and felt strongly enough to share her message on the rear window of her car for the whole community to see, was totally kick ass. I asked my friend this afternoon if he remembers what any of his mom's messages said. "REAL PEOPLE WEAR FAKE FUR," was the one he remembers most vividly. Twenty years later and we are still talking about it. How's that for a small act of resistance?
3. When Tupac Tuesday turns into Tupac Wednesday, and then Tupac Thursday on the studio playlist, I know there is some crazy shit going on in the world. I imagine he would have had something deeply meaningful to say about all this.
What did you learn today?
