All 3 things tonight were learned while attending a gratitude candle lighting ceremony at my daughter's school.
1. When you've lost faith in the future of this country (more so), go stand in a room with a bunch of young ones and ask them what they are grateful for. It does the body good.
2. "Peace is being yourself and showing kindness to others." Says my daughter. My adult translation - be inclusive, otherwise you're just a real dick.
3. At around 10:10 am this morning, a chapel full of parents, teachers, and littles, sang, prayed, and shared gratitude. A tear jerker for sure. Kids are pretty damn cute. The biggest surprise of the morning was when we were asked to join our children in song. On the back of the program was the printed verse to God Bless America. I don't think I've sung this song outside of a ballpark in a long time, maybe since 2001. But there we were, standing together, singing our hearts out, proclaiming through song that even though things did not go as we had hoped last week, this was our country too and we were not going to give up on our vision for it. That's some powerful shit and don't you forget it.
What did you learn today?
