THESE 3 THINGS 066

These 3 Things

066

1. Bruce.

I'm embarrassed to admit, but I know next to nothing about Bruce Springsteen. Surprising coming from a once New Yorker, but somehow I kind of missed the whole Bruce train. Last night I watched him on the Late Show, because of my Colbert crush, and I was blown away. Bruce is fascinating. All 3 things today are straight from the Boss's mouth. Check out his interview, it's on YouTube, etc.

That's what artists do. They lie in service of the truth. - Bruce Springsteen

I had never heard this before and the words made my jaw hit the floor. A fascinating idea, especially coming from someone who is 67 and has a career spanning nearly 50 years. What does it mean as artists to lie in service of the truth? I'm still marinating over this one. What do you think?

2. The Magic Trick.

You are there to manifest something...before you go in it's an empty space, an empty building. So the audience is going to come and you are going to show up and together you are going to manifest something that is very real, very tangible but you are going to pull it out of thin air. It wasn't there before you showed up, it didn't exist. It's real magic. - Bruce Springsteen

This idea reminded me so much of one of my favorite psychoanalytic theories, the Analytic Third. Thomas Ogden is a local Bay Area psychoanalyst and a total genius. His books are bibles for analysts and I spent the better part of my psych career chewing on every single word of Ogden's I could get my hands on. The Analytic Third speaks to a space that exists when the analyst and patient combine as an outside third entity. There is the analyst's mind, the patient's mind and together they create a third entity that feels very much like magic. As a analyst I savored these moments with patients and as an artist it is this magic that makes it all feel so alive.

3. On the cusp of being a father. Everything else goes away.

Once the baby came along...everything stopped and all your defensive mechanisms all the things you do to protect yourself everyday all the dances you do, suddenly they halt and you want to run out in the street and say to people stop shopping, get off your cell phones stop watching television, a messiah has come. That's how you feel about your kids. - Bruce Springsteen

This really resonated with me. So many things that took up a ton of my mental energy melted away when my daughter was born. My heart exploded all over the place, it never came back together, and while it was hard to get used to at first, I'm better for it.

What did you learn today?
