1. Sometimes to reach the top you have to start back at the bottom. I spent a good 20 minutes this morning mesmerized by the tank of Lake Oku clawed frogs at the Academy of Sciences. If you have never seen a Lake Oku clawed frog, they are about the size of a dime store pink pencil eraser with bright eyes and tiny brown spots. Most of the frogs had taken to the front corners of the tank and were trying to reach the water's surface. Over and over again I watched them jump from the bottom and try to swim to the top. One frog in particular would nearly reach the waterline, when he would stop swimming and allow himself to fall back to the bottom. I noticed that every frog in the tank approached rising to the waterline in the same way. They each reached a personal threshold and if they didn't get to the top in one try, they would fall all the way back to the bottom and start again. Almost every frog in that tank reached the waterline during my 20 minute observation. Some made it 2 or 3 times. I was really inspired with the ease that each frog was able to let go, even when they were almost at the top, and sink back down to the bottom to start all over again. I left thinking, be more like the Lake Oku.

2. Maybe we change too. On the way home from San Francisco this afternoon I thought to myself, as I have many times over the last 5 years or so, wow has this city changed. And it has, that's for certain, but it occurred to me in the 20 or so years since I moved to California, it's possible that I have changed too. Maybe many of the things that feel unfamiliar about San Francisco feel different because I am so different. Both thoughts kind of broke my heart a little.

3. Scientists are currently studying a part of our solar system beyond Neptune that is full of dwarf planets. Some of them are so far away that science is trying to keep up with the instruments necessary to fully see them. It is estimated that in the next 5 years astronomers will be able to see the planets they assume are there, along with even more. Neat.
