PROMPT #9 A ROOM

Sometimes a room is a space kept within. I like the idea of the heart being a room. It’s hard to keep that door open. Grief is also a room. Perhaps the same room. I'm of the opinion that love is grief and grief is love. What is so extraordinary about this time is that we all now have a shared room. There will be a space in all of us that remembers this time. Perhaps months from now when we understand the full meaning of a sweet embrace. Years from now when we look at a book on our book shelf or a project around the house that we created during this time. There will be something that gets us all to enter that space within. I hope we see each other there. And are able to hold each other in that space. Imagine looking into your heart and seeing a world full of people looking back. And so it goes.

This is a song by Billy Joel. It's hauntingly beautiful and carries with it love and grief all in one breath. I sing it to my daughter at night sometimes. I hope I have let her into my room.

In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows
So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows

This photo is of a small shrine that a friend gifted the Dude and I when we were married. Behind the Palo Santo are small cuts of hair from our dog Stella Blue who passed about 11 years ago. It also holds the baby teeth of Sherman, our beloved mutt who has been overjoyed to have all his people around. Swipe to see the beautiful drawing by @blueshineart of this prompt.
